Spices

Black Pepper

Pepper is a spice that’s familiar to everyone. This slightly pungent and aromatic spice should be ground fresh for optimal flavor. Whenever possible, opt to buy whole peppercorns and use a pepper mill instead of the pre-ground spice to give you the most flavor and heat.

Black pepper can be used as an ingredient in recipes to add flavor and spice to meats, fish, vegetables, salad dressings, soups, stir-fries, pasta, and more.

Ground Ginger

It’s most often used in baking, but ginger can also be found in spice blends such as jerk spice, curry powder or tandoori seasoning. Its sweet, peppery-lemon notes complement both savory and sweet dishes.

Ground ginger is often used in baking to lend a spicy, warm flavor to favorites like pumpkin pie and, of course, gingerbread. Ground ginger is often found in spice blends with other similar, complementary spices as well.

A premium blend of coriander, cumin, turmeric and other spices. Curry is used most often for all sort of chicken, vegetable, fish and meat curries, as well as in other stews, soups, and rice or lentil dishes.

Ground Paprika

Beautiful taste in any chicken, pork or beef stew. Paprika brings beautiful color and a hint of sweetness. Perfect for barbecue sauce, prepared rubs and marinades, potato casseroles, cream sauces and egg dishes.

Cinnamon Powder

A warm spice packed with antioxidants, cinnamon adds a touch of sweetness to dishes. Typically used in baking and sweet preparations, can be found in savory Indian and Moroccan-style dishes.

In the West it is popular in baked goods like cinnamon rolls and cookies, or with apples and pears in hearty pies, crumbles and cobblers.

Chili Peppers Crushed

Chili flakes are a great way to add heat to any dish. Made from crushed, dried red chili peppers, you’ll often find this spice used in pasta and pizza, but it’s also added to pickles and oils for flavor.

Crushed red pepper is used by food manufacturers in pickling blends, chowders, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, soups and sausage.

Chili Powder

Known for a bright red or orange colour, Chili powder is a combination of a variety of chilis. Often used in taco seasoning and curries, can be found with different levels of heat (mild, medium and hot). Sometimes you’ll find chili powder contains cumin, paprika and salt.

It’s famously added to rubs, soups, stews, chili, and a variety of Latin dishes.

Ground Cumin

Warm and earthy, cumin is the world’s second most popular spice and a great addition to North African, Middle Eastern or Indian dishes. It’s best to add cumin early in the cooking process to increase the depth of flavor.

It’s good to add to curries, hummus, stews, falafel, meats, cheese. It’s often found in chili and curry powders.
